How to make your own wooden shelving
Whether you are in desperate need of a new shelf or just need something to pass the time, building a wooden shelf is a great storage solution. However, if you have never built one before, it can be difficult to know where to start. That’s why we have put together a step by step guide on how to put up your first wooden shelf.
Step 1: Choose your wood and brackets
To start your DIY journey, you need to choose your wood and shelf brackets. The great thing about floating shelves is that they can really help make a room look stylish. When it comes to choosing a bracket, it is completely up to you what quality you do decide to go for. However, it is important to note that investing in a cheaper bracket will not ensure that your shelf will be the highest of quality and will not be able to withstand a lot of weight. We would always recommend buying a higher quality bracket for your shelf to ensure it doesn’t break.
Once you have chosen your bracket, you can then choose the wood you want to make your shelf. For this, we would recommend buying a strong and durable oak panel. From here you can cut the wood into the dimensions that you need for your shelf.
Step 2: Find a place for your shelf
Now you have your wood and brackets, you need to know where to put your shelving units. This is ultimately your decision to make however there are some important factors to note when finding a place for your shelf. Some of the main things for you to consider is the height and length of the shelf. If you place your shelf too high, then it can be difficult to be able to even reach the items on the shelf. Or alternatively, if the length of your shelf is too short then you might not be able to fit many items on there.
It is important to take into account what objects you want to place on the shelf when deciding the location. Especially if you have children as you would want to put fragile things well out of reach of them!
Step 3: Drill brackets in place
Now you are prepared, it is time to add the brackets to the wall. You want to hold the bracket up to the wall (where you would like it to go) and make a marking with a pencil where you need to drill. Once you have your markings, you can begin drilling the holes. It is also important to check for any electrical wiring before drilling. Make sure to drill to the depth of the screws to ensure they fit in properly.
Once you have made the holes, you can hold the bracket back up against the wall and then screw in the screws. You can then tighten this with a screwdriver to make sure it is extra secure.
Step 4: Drill wood in place
Now your brackets are up on the wall, it is time to add the shelf itself. Simply place the plank on the brackets ensuring that it is aligned correctly. You can now drill into the underside of the shelf to then screw in the hole. Fit in the screw and tighten it firmly to ensure that it doesn’t move.
Step 5: Start filling those shelves!
Congratulations! You have now made your first shelf. You can now start adding some objects to your floating shelf. Make sure to put things that are relatively light on the shelf to reduce the likelihood of it breaking. However, if you do have high-quality brackets and good quality wood, then you can put heavier objects on there.
